Cookie Policy

This page explains the cookies and similar technologies used on AsiaMap.net, why they are used, and how you can manage or refuse them. It complements the privacy policy, which covers personal data more broadly.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. The next time you visit the same site, the browser sends the cookie back, allowing the site to recognise the browser. Similar technologies include local storage and pixel tags. Together, these are referred to here as “cookies”.

Cookie categories used on this site

1. Strictly necessary

AsiaMap.net itself does not set first-party cookies in order to function. The pages render the same way whether or not third-party cookies are stored. Some core libraries used by the site (Leaflet, Fuse.js) do not set cookies. If you block all cookies in your browser, the maps and search will continue to work.

2. Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to measure aggregate traffic. Google Analytics sets cookies (typically named _ga and _ga_*) that record an anonymised identifier and visit information. The site uses the data to understand which countries and regional pages are most useful, and to find pages that need work. The data is processed by Google in line with its privacy policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

3. Advertising

The site is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense. AdSense and its certified third-party partners may set cookies to:

Where required by law — for example, for visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland — advertising cookies are only set after consent is obtained, using Google’s consent management. You can withdraw consent or change your choice at any time by clearing the relevant cookies and reloading the page.

How to manage cookies

In your browser. All major browsers let you view, restrict, or delete cookies. The exact steps differ by browser, but the option is usually under “Privacy” or “Site Settings”. You can choose to block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, or accept cookies. Blocking third-party cookies will limit personalised advertising on this and most other sites.

Through Google. You can review and adjust the data Google uses for ad personalisation across its services and partner sites at Google Ads Settings.

Industry opt-out tools. Two industry pages let you opt out of personalised advertising from many vendors at once:

These tools rely on cookies to remember your choice; if you clear cookies, you may need to reapply your opt-out.

Mobile devices. Mobile operating systems offer a similar control, often called “Limit Ad Tracking” (iOS) or “Opt out of Ads Personalisation” (Android), which apply across apps on the device.

Other technologies

Map tiles served from OpenStreetMap-based providers and country flag images served by flagcdn.com require requests to those services. Those requests transmit your IP address as a normal part of any web request, but do not require cookies for the maps and flags to load.

Changes to this policy

This cookie policy will be updated when the cookies in use change — for example, when a new analytics or advertising service is added — or when applicable rules require new disclosures. The “Last reviewed” date at the top of the page reflects the most recent review.
