Privacy Policy

This page explains what information AsiaMap.net (“the site”, “we”) collects when you visit, how it is used, and the choices you have. The site is a free reference resource for the geography of Asia. It does not require an account, does not run a forum, and does not sell goods or services. The amount of personal data involved is therefore deliberately small.
1. Information collected automatically
When you load a page on AsiaMap.net, your browser automatically sends standard request information to the server hosting the site. This includes your IP address, the user-agent string identifying your browser and operating system, the page you requested, the referring page if any, and the time of the request. This is the same information any web server receives by default and is used to deliver the page, keep the site online, and protect against abuse.
The site uses Google Analytics (the GA4 product, tag G-J3804XLRB5) to understand aggregate traffic patterns — for example, which countries and regional pages are most visited, how visitors move through the site, and which devices are used. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and processes a truncated form of your IP address along with usage events. The result is statistical and is used to decide which pages need attention, not to identify individual users.
2. Information you provide
The site does not have account registration, comment forms, contact forms, or newsletter sign-ups. The only way you can voluntarily share information with AsiaMap.net is by sending an email to the address listed on the contact page. If you do email us, your message and your email address are kept only for as long as needed to reply and to keep a record of any reported correction.
3. Cookies
The site itself does not set first-party cookies for personalisation. Cookies are set by third-party services described below: Google Analytics (for measurement) and Google AdSense and its advertising partners (for serving and measuring ads). For the full list of cookie categories and how to manage them, see the cookie policy.
4. Advertising and Google AdSense
AsiaMap.net is funded by display advertising. Ads are served by Google AdSense, a third-party advertising service operated by Google. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites on the web.
Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising at any time by visiting Google Ads Settings. You may also opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, YourOnlineChoices. For more information on how Google uses data from sites that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Where required by law (for example, for visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), AsiaMap.net relies on Google’s consent management to obtain consent for the use of advertising cookies and the processing of personal data for personalised advertising before such cookies are set.
5. Third-party services
In addition to Google services, the site loads a small number of third-party assets to function:
- Leaflet — the open-source mapping library, loaded from a public CDN (unpkg.com).
- Fuse.js — the search library, loaded from a public CDN (jsdelivr.net).
- OpenStreetMap-based map tiles — for the interactive maps; tile requests transmit your IP address to the tile provider as a normal part of any web request.
- flagcdn.com — for country flag images shown on country pages.
These providers operate under their own privacy terms. AsiaMap.net does not pass them any additional information beyond the standard request data their servers automatically receive.
6. Legal bases (GDPR / UK GDPR)
Where the General Data Protection Regulation or UK GDPR apply, the legal bases for processing are:
- Legitimate interests — for keeping the site online, defending against abuse, and producing aggregate analytics.
- Consent — for personalised advertising cookies and any non-essential cookies, where consent is required.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data, including the right to access the data held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, restrict or object to processing, and lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Residents of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are protected by the GDPR / UK GDPR. Residents of California are protected by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), including the right to know what personal information is collected and the right to opt out of its sale or sharing. AsiaMap.net does not sell personal information.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. Please describe your request clearly so it can be handled within a reasonable time. You may also exercise rights related to advertising directly through the Google Ads Settings link above.
8. Data retention
Server access logs are retained for a short period and then deleted or anonymised. Aggregate analytics in Google Analytics are subject to Google’s default retention period. Emails sent through the contact address are kept only as long as needed to handle the matter raised and any related follow-up.
9. Children
The site is suitable for general audiences, including students. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Where personalised advertising is restricted by law for under-age visitors, Google’s ad serving applies the relevant restrictions automatically.
10. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated to reflect changes in services used, in legal requirements, or in the way the site operates. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of this page indicates when the most recent review took place. Substantive changes will be reflected on the page rather than communicated individually.
11. Contact
For privacy questions and to exercise the rights described above, email [email protected].
