How many countries are in Asia?
There are 49 countries in Asia, grouped into East, Southeast, South, Central and West Asia.
AsiaMap.net counts 49 countries in Asia: 47 United Nations member states plus Palestine (a UN observer state) and Taiwan, both of which have limited international recognition. All 49 are profiled on this site, grouped into five sub-regions: West Asia (18), Southeast Asia (11), South Asia (9), East Asia (6), Central Asia (5).
The count can vary slightly depending on how partially-recognised states and transcontinental countries (such as Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Cyprus) are treated. We follow the common UN geoscheme, which places Russia in Eastern Europe even though most of its land lies in Asia, and counts Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Cyprus as Asian.
